Getting here
San Jose to Golfito: Most international flights arrive in San Jose late in the day or evening and you will most likely have to spend one night in San Jose before heading down to Zancudo.
There are several area hotels we can recommend that are comfortable, affordable and safe. We also have an excellent driver based in San Jose who will be more than happy to tour the city with you or do airport pick ups and drop offs for a very reasonable flat fee.
Sansa Airlines Flights
Flights on Sansa range from $75 to $110 each way (2009). Sansa flies out of the International airport in San Jose which can be convenient for some travellers. We can book your Sansa flights for you or you can book online at: www.flysansa.com
We recommend that you book your Sansa flight as soon as you have completed your international travel arrangements. The planes are Cessna Caravans and seat a maximum of 15 people. During the high season, these flights fill up quickly and you may not get a seat if you wait until the last minute.
Nature Air Flights
Nature Air flies out of Tobias Bolanos Airport in Pavos, San Jose. International travellers will need to take a taxi from the International Airport to use this service. They fly very rugged twin engined planes which can fly comfortably even in rough weather. We have had good experiences with Nature Air. Choosing Nature Air or Sansa is a matter of preference and convenience. The price seems similar for flights but check the websites. Again we can book your flights if you prefer.
By Bus
There are several buses that operate daily from San Jose to Golfito. The trip is approximately 8 hours.
By Car
If you rent a car or SUV in San Jose (and we highly recommend 4 wheel drive vehicles), take the Pan American highway south to Rio Claro. At the flashing light, turn right towards Golfito Just before Golfito turn left at “Bar Rodeo” towards Zancudo. The road is paved until you get to the river ferry. The cost is around 600 colones to cross the river and be forewarned that the ferry does not run at maximum low tide or after 8pm. After the ferry, continue to a small town called Conte. Turn right and stay to the right until you reach Zancudo. The total driving time from San Jose is approximately 7 - 9 hours depending on weather and road conditions.
By Taxi
If you are traveling in a group, taxis can be an affordable way to travel. For around $300 you can rent an air-conditioned mini-bus in San Jose. The trip is approximately 7 – 9 hours. Ask us for taxi driver recommendations.
